The mesentery is a double fold of the peritoneum, which is the lining of the abdominal cavity and it connects the intestine to the abdomen. It is officially the 79th organ of the human digestive system and has prompted its inclusion in major human physiology text and reference books.
A new paper in the journal The Lancet Gastroenterology & Hepatology explains that this newly classified organ, had been hiding in plain sight in our digestive systems for more than 100 years. Dr. J. Calvin Coffey, a professor of surgery at the University of Limerick in Ireland was the first to discover it’s presence.
Geneticist George Church of Harvard Medical School in Boston, Massachusetts, is growing GM pigs to grow organs for human transplant. He and colleagues had used the CRISPR/Cas9 gene-editing technology to inactivate 62 porcine endogenous retroviruses (PERVs) in pig embryos. These viruses are embedded in all pigs’ genomes and cannot be treated or neutralized. It is feared that they could cause disease in human transplant recipients.(Sara Reardon, Nature) DOI: doi:10.1038/nature.2015.18525
